Yeah, its sad, but its also a part of their culture.
A part of who's culture? This is news to me.
wu - didnt you know? dork here is the foremost expert on the arab world. i would watch what you say about issues that you know nothing about. just some friendly advice.
Honor killings are actually common in the Islamic world, espcially in places like Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan. They have of course been outlawed, but are still performed in rural areas where there is little or no law except for the elders.
An Islamic view of honor killings
A more western view
Good reading.
A quote from the first article: "The most severe manifestations of punishment affect only a small percentage of women..."
Second article: "Given that honor killings often remain a private family affair, no official statistics are available on the practice or its frequency... Though a growing number of Palestinians find honor killings unacceptable, the practice continues."
I realize its semantics here, but I think its important to diferentiate between whats commonly done and what is done by a small but vocal group of extremists. Both articles make it clear that while these punishments do occur, they are decidely anit-Islam in nature. There is no doubt in my mind this is a horrible perversion of the religion and that these acts must stop. Yet, I think we shouldnt categorize the entire culture being this way - its ludicrous to think so.
Most of those arabs would not know honor if it hit them in the head, hopefully very hard.
cmon dude, wake up - nothing in life is that simple. i know many arabs personally and none of them, none of them come close to that discription. just like the "red menace" two decades before it, its much simpler when we paint the world in good and evil, yet very rarely does it work out that way. you're smarter than that bro, i know you are.

So marrying a foreigner is dishonorable, but killing your sister and her baby is not dishonorable?

? Go figure ?
