Parking brake is the most common American term but I think most Americans would recognize hand brake as being the same thing.
But most of Florida is so flat that we rarely use it. Simply putting the car in parking gear is enough to keep the car in place.
It takes really bad luck or a extra helping of stupid to run yourself over with your own car, even in Florida.
But it's still probably more likely in Florida, right? ;o)
