There is a part 2 to this, also.

Interesting retrieval of a historical sound. Was it forgotten because most wanted to forget the war?

I would say not as if you look around there is at least one film from the 30's that have several vets at a public gathering with each giving their version of the yell. I would say, that as time passed on there was really no need for it. I have read where some modern day parents used it to get the day started. Myself, learned from my father and grand father as one was a fox hunter the other a rabbit hunter and both used the yell for their dogs. Both saying it was the rebel yell and the same that you hear in the video.

I never really used it since those days as I never owned a pack of dogs*laffin*
It just faded with time and really no sense for one person to use it. I could hardly imagine waking up and cracking out a rebel yell lol

Are you talking about this film? I had heard it earlier, but couldn't hear the similarity. However, I supposed the sound would be different coming from an 90 year old man than a young man...so perhaps that is to be expected.

Interesting story. May I ask what state you are from?

You might want to send a letter/email/call to that museum. They may find it interesting that folks in your area passed the yell down.

Although I am not a descendant of a member of the confederacy (my GG-Grandpa was an infantryman in the Indiana Militia), I still find the entire conflict fascinating. Thanks for sharing.

I seen that one, but this is the film I'm speaking about and one can hear a few diffirent versions. But given their age I feel a couple were a bit too old to give it proper, but a few did. And the actions and response from the crowd would support the not forgetting the war aspect. I was born and rasied in Louisiana. I also know that my ancestors were in the war, forget who, what and where lol.
All though on my mothers side, her maiden name was Singleton and that side had migrated from Virgina to La. and it was said they were decedents of John S. Mosby. The middle intial was for Singleton as back then the paternal name of the grandfather was often used for the middle name. Mosby was famous and provoctive in his tactics.

Nice. On the Smithsonian recording that you linked, I heard them giving the cry in three parts, as in my orginal post. But I didn't hear the lower pitched middle part. I did hear a kind of tremble in the sound of some that I did not perceive in the recordings on my post.

The comments to the Smithsonian recording were also interesting. Such as:

I find it more interesting how a Southern dialect developed. You don't really hear it in the speakers, they all sort of soung like Teddy Roosevelt to my ear. I had read that before the war, all Americans generally spoke the same dialect.

I saw your link on Mosby. Interesting character.

Dialect for sure is another subject. It would seem to me, that statement would hold some truth depending on what area the speakers were from, even city or rural areas, their education as well. Most were intoduced as officers, Gen.,Capt. Col etc. and would lead to formal education as all officers of the era for both sides used that as to who were ranked. I would say that the eastern states would be close to the same while the further south and west the dialects would be diffirent.

Also, something very interesting was the Union states were mostly Anglo-Saxon while the Confederate states were mostly Celtic at a ratio of 3 to 1. That for sure would make the dialects distinct.
