The funny part? We HAVE a resource that would allow us to get off foreign oil but nobody will use it...nuclear. look up "Thorium Reactors" and see how we have had the tech for nearly 20 years now to build small, clean, and easily built reactors that could power this country for centuries cheaply. Reprocess the waste and by the time you've used up all the material what is left is safe enough you could sleep on it (Hint: all that is left is beta radiation which can be blocked with even a blanket).

Sadly the NIMBYs will keep us from advancing and will instead let crap like windmills, which while fine for a supplement has no chance in hell of scaling to the size we need, waste billions. Oh an electric cars? might want to look into how much the batteries cost, both in energy to manufacture and to dispose of.

The ONLY way to switch to an all electric society is to have enough power we can run vehicles like with the old trolley system, with lines either above or embedded in the road, and that means we'll need nuclear.
