He probably was just 'messing around' ... one would hope that it was not malicious.
A felony sounds pretty rough, but crashing an airplane or helicopter is pretty serious.
Then they hammer him in the article by saying he was crying and that he used to be a stock clerk making $9 an hour busting his tail of 56 hours a week

Yep. It could definitely have serious outcomes.
It seems felonies should be reserved for repeat offenders or someone with malign intent, while this should just require corrective action.
