There was a story about this a number of years ago to the effect that if your ancestors have been in the US for many generations, there is a good chance that you are of mixed race, especially if you think you are African American.
The gist of the story is that in the South there is only Black and White and everyone knows which one they are. Except they are probably wrong. If you think you are White, you are probably mostly White but you may have some Black as well. But most Black folks have at least some White in them, again if their families have been here a long time.
Apparently there was a lot of hanky-panky going on in the old days.
