I just did a little research on her and her atheist foundation , seems to me she was a little over zealous , that's all. It's difficult to see why she was hated, until you remember she dared to cross the American Christians - I applaud her efforts to keep church and state separate. Like I said, I only did a little research - I've never heard of her before. Do atheists go to hell ?, do agnostics get the last laugh ?

She was very famous in her time.

In the Cold War, there was an effort to simplify the distinction between godless communism and God-fearing freedom-loving Americans. So they went a little overboard with the mix of God and country (sound familiar?) A good example is adding "under God" to the pledge of allegiance. The pledge was about 100 years old by the time they added those two words in the 1950's. While those two words won't really hurt anyone, you could make a pretty good argument that they don't belong there, due to seperation of church and state. You could do that, but it would be a monumental waste of time, much ado about nothing.

Well, that is the sort of thing that O'Hare did, with a zeal that could only be called religious, or in her case anti-religous. The reason she is hated is that she almost always won in court, because she had the law and the constitiution on her side. She was known as brilliant, but a miserable, nasty, driven, humorless person. She has a few good quotable quotes, the best of which is;

Religion without a hell isn't worth a damn

Good point, and funny too, for a humorless bitch. She ended badly, with her family and friends turned against her, and being hated by most everyone. Her son became a born again fanatic who spent his life denouncing his mom and trying to reverse her successes. Very sad, all in all.

Yeah , I agree with you to an extent , that can apply to a lot of things. People are often obsessed with the principle rather than the reality , though of course the law is often an ass. I still admire her though. Thanks for the info :-]
