unfortunatley DSL has been costing around 40-50/month for at least 2 years now...
Well, for one thing, it would make downloading all those pictures of Carmen Electra and that other chick posted the other day a lot easier. :)
Yeah, it'll never happen. The ISPs wouldn't let that sort of coolness come without a hefty price tag. It's a real shame; wasn't broadband supposed to revolutionize the Net? At $40 a month, the revolution'll never come. Meanwhile, Mediacom, Earthlink, and all the rest make $ hand over fist.
Uh, didn't @Home and Covad go bankrupt? Also, didn't AT&T have to sell their broadband unit to Comcast due to loses?
I think you're mistaken. They are NOT making money. They are competing with eachother so much that they have to lower prices to very low levels.
And that's why you're not seeing faster services. While we're talking about this, why don't you go out and price an OC48 circuit and peering arangements, and see how much "profit" is being made off of your $40/month.

A company called surewest offers 10mbit fiber-optic in my town, but not in my area. I think they have it for $50+ since a whole package including Voice, Internet and TV for $120.

Yea, sure. It's technically capable of 50 megabits/sec, but what provider in their right mind is going to allow you to utilize that amount of bandwidth for a price a residential consumer can afford? My cable modem is technically capable of 42 megabits downstream and about 10 megabits upstream. That doesn't mean they're going to allow me to use that for just $39/month.
