That would be because blackberry's suck. They just sucked less than old windows mobile phones when it came to being a well connected mobile device. They hit low price points first to start getting your joe average consumer as part of their base, but now that the iphone is cheaper than it was, and android phones are getting cheap, price won't protect that market.

From a business standpoint, supporting them is expensive. Supporting windows mobile, android, and the iphone form a business IT standpoint is relatively cheap. For example, for my place of business to support them, it's first blackberry customer is about $3400 in licensing fees. If I want to support all 80,000 users, I have to shell out about $30 a user to RIM. For activesync, which all the others use, I pay $1500 a year for the first person, and some fraction of a $2.50 license surcharge (covers some more features than just activesync) on my regular licensing for our collaboration software.

About the only thing RIM does that the others don't is support spying on your employees. So unless you have to submit to FTC/SEC audits, or show FDA compliance for drug/medical device research, there's not much incentive to stay with the platform based on the feature set.

I have the CrackBerry and now that I finally got the software upgrade, it is working pretty well. I know people who use the iPhone and it certainly has a lot more apps but otherwise I don't think it works any better.

I am, um, interested in know what raz means by companies spying on their employees. Spying how, exactly?

Reply to Gramps:

The blackberry enterprise server, the back end you NEED to have in order for you to get email and calendaring, allows central logging of all email, sms, etc.

I don't expect the crackberries to leave banking and pharma.
