Wide use isn't really practical except as a hybrid design, and even then it will really need an ultracapacitor rather than a chemical battery that needs replacement every couple years. Ultimately all-electric IS the way to go, but we have a few fundamental technologies that need further development.
One advantage that people don't think about though: Even though you're really just displacing the emissions from the tailpipe to the smokestack, you're still getting the advantage of centralization, thus allowing you to switch energy bases, add emission control, whatever you want to do, without having to get everyone to change cars.
