Tennis and golf are stopped for rain. Outdoor track meets also. Indoor games that are being played outdoors are stopped (in all cases I can think of). Basketball and boxing, for example. Baseball is not the only one. Swimming meets are stopped if there is lightening.
I think the author of this piece wrote it while he was bored at a baseball game.
He needs to watch a Cricket match that goes on for over 24 hours, then he will be sure that Baseball is not boring, well at least by comparison anyway!
