Yet another chance for progressives to start construction companies with low, low management cost and high, high salaries for workers. The companies could make billions to distribute to the professionally unemployed, and employ tens of thousands of unprofessionally unemployed workers (the only reason to start a business). Rich and greedy business people do this all the time for the wrong reason; progressives could make this money for the right reason. Why has this not been done already?

See this is what baffles me. Everyone is getting played by the spin machine. The left says that we need to stop outsourcing jobs. The right says buy only made in america. Somehow this means they are polar opposites.

On the issue of infrastructure maintenance, I think the issue for the right is to get only necessary work done without waste, and that it shouldn't necessarily be funded from the federal level. I agree with that last bit, but I live in the most donating donor state regarding highway tax dollars, and our bridges are falling apart.

One example. Here in NJ, we have a state law requiring that a certain amount of business goes to minority owned businesses (but don't call it a quota). For a fairly high profile contract, they placed a bid. They were denied for part of the work due to the the aforementioned law. So they got to work on 80% of the job. 20% of the job got allocated to a minority owned business. The owner is black, and married to a politician involved in the decision making process. The company employs nobody on a permanent basis other than the owner, who already has another job. Their bid price was higher than the company doing 80% of the work, and they just sub contracted their 20% to the original company at the original bid price. So Every NJ taxpayer wound up paying a premium to a minority owned company to NOT create any additional jobs for any minorities.

What baffles me is that those on the left and those on the right can't find a shared disgust for this.

This is rightly a form of reparations to the minority, as paid by the former slave owning tax payer, and this system is the pendulum of fairness to the progressive heart. I would say the minority should not be taxed on any profit he makes; the tax should be paid by the 80% contractor as he is rich and greedy.

Oh, I am disgusted by all of the shenanigans, the sweetheart deals, the no-bid contracts, and the rest of it.

Our elected officials need to stop the infighting long enough to put aside some money, I don't care if it is State or Federal, to fix the bridges, the highways, and so on, and put some people to work in jobs that need doing.

That doesn't seem like a lot to ask.

It apparently is, as what is in the jobs bill ISN'T that, but really the gifting of money to states with little oversight for abuse. Gift it to NJ and it WILL be abused, badly. I'm sure we are FAR from the only state in that situation.
