Owning a car increases your chance that you will die in a car accident. Actually, some list that odds are higher with the car. Should we disallow car ownership, to responsible owners?
A car is a useful tool that most people use every day so while a car can be dangerous its usefulness far out weights its risk. For most people a handgun is not a tool they use every day so for them the risk out weights the usefulness. If you use a gun as part of your job or business or you use a gun for sport then the statement above does not pertain to you since you have a legit use for it.
Some people would say that sportsman/business use NOT "legit". Others would say that personal defense IS "legit".
If a person with proper temperament, training, and competence has a weapon, I believe their odds of preventing problems for their household are increased. By denying them that right, you are accepting responsibility for harm that might come to that person's family. And such a person would know not to point a gun at his own head. And they would properly store that weapon so that another unqualified person could not use it.
The question is, how to make sure that only the person of proper temperament, training, and competence can own a weapon. Some measures are in place, probably more need to be added (depending on the state).
I never said that I thought that it was a good idea to deny anyone the right to bear arms. I may not be a conservative but I am a firm believer in the 2nd amendment because I fear conservatives. Rwanda, was a lesson well learned. I just mention the fact that many people think that owning a gun will make their family safer. This is not borne out by statistics. Statistically, owning a gun increases the chance that you will take your own life.
r. Stewartm9295 is right. There are many, many products that allow suicide, for one example, that need to be banned. When we ban all of these murdering devices and I think the suicide issue will be soved.
Worldwide 30% of suicides are from pesticides. The use of this method however varies markedly from 4% in Europe to more than 50% in the Pacific region.[82] In the United States 52% of suicides involve the use of firearms.[83] Asphyxiation (such as with a suicide bag) and poisoning are fairly common as well. Together they comprised about 40% of U.S. suicides. Other methods of suicide include blunt force trauma (jumping from a building or bridge, self-defenestrating, stepping in front of a train, or car collision, for example). Exsanguination or bloodletting (slitting one's wrist or throat), intentional drowning, self-immolation, electrocution, and intentional starvation are other suicide methods. Individuals may also intentionally provoke another person into administering lethal action against them, as in suicide by cop.
After eliminating these killers we can outlaw all these other causes of death kike AIDS, accidents, alcohol and drug abuse, fires, wars and so on.
What's wrong with you guys. Can't you read. I never asked for anything to be banned. All I did was state a true statistic that having a gun in your home increases the chance you will put a bullet in your own head.
Make criminals afraid of being killed could be more effective manner to reduce crime.... Cheaper all around if every state has good strong castle doctrine and if someone threatens you out in the open.
I'd agree with that if the COPS are counted under that castle doctrine as well. Don't forget it wasn't so long ago that a court ruled that if the cops kick in your door with an invalid warrant, guns blazing, and you try to protect yourself? YOU get sent to prison. There was also a guy in AR recently who reached for his gun when the cops kicked in his door with NO announcement. They shot him and THEN gave him 10 years for threatening a cop!
Frankly nowadays I'm more worried about the gangbangers with badges than i am criminals. I've lived in several bad neighborhoods in my life and most criminals are chickensh#t, hell a firecracker will make them pee themselves and run. It is the cops that have seen to many Dirty harry movies and are out looking to start something that are the more dangerous IMHO.
Oh, I completely agree if the law enforcement is breaking the law as well.

Owning a gun increases the chance that you will blow your own head off. Having a gun in your home increases the chance that someone in that house will blow someone else in that house head off.
