Cuts are painful. This is why they are not popular.
The entitlements should have never existed in the first place and only bad politics brought them to life. The rich earned their money one way or other, so government does not deserve anymore and in turn: those progressive bums who don't wish to donate their own money, but more than happy to steal other people money for politic entitlements for votes.
Keep in mind a majority of republican voters are eldery on medicare.. You can talk about cutting it all day but in the end you are going to cut off youre own feet.
And workers don't work hard for their money...
You are seeing this from a Left vs Right point of view, when it is really much simpler than that. Corporations can spend an unlimited amount of money in the political area for the first time in this country, thanks to the Bush Supreme Court, and so now corporations and the people who run them are spending freely to get control over our political process.
These people have a very straightforward agenda, which is to make sure the US government doesn't waste any money by spending it on anything that doesn't directly benefit themselves.
They employ people, so it is in their interest that people work as cheaply as possible. They bear the cost of safety and environment measures, so they want to do away with them. In sort they are out to maximize their own income and profit, and minimize their taxes at the expense of everyone else.
In a way it is hard to blame them, because that is the goal of any corporation, but the US government was not set up to be their lapdog, but to work for all of the people of the nation.
These people have hijacked the political process and it is not clear how we can get it back from them, but it is clear that we must do so.
I wonder what will be the result of cutting the deficit and the tax rate at the same time. Lets see, $1.5 trillion cut in deficit that translate into about 30 million less jobs. The 30% tax rate cut for the rich means that the rich will have an even larger share of the national income which they will not spend. That's another $2 trillion of demand out of the economy. Thats another 30 million less job. 60 million less jobs. I guess the result will be the Greatest Depression.

I don't know what it is about conservatives in their thinking that deficits are caused by excessive spending, and not insufficient taxation.
