I would say that the dems message was muddled and confused on the health care reform. It wasn't intended to reduce costs to the people, it was intended to reduce costs to the government, and they should have been clear about that.
On the other hand, there was so much disinformation coming from the Right about this Bill that most people have no idea what is actually in it, Death Panels or funding for abortion or a supposed 'government takeover' of health care.
Which brings us to a dilemma that the new GOP House is going to have to deal with; their two goals of cutting spending and repealing health care reform are mutually exclusive. The reform, as messed up as it is, does reduce government spending, mostly by cost shifting to the public, so they can't get rid of it without adding to the deficit that they promised to control. Not to worry, the new GOP House will pass a repeal of the the reform, which will make conservative voters happy, but which will die in the House and never take effect. A good talking point, but meaningless.

Good bye to a law that did NOTHING to reduce costs to the people or the medical community, since they lied to get people on-board.
