Every one directly or indirectly will be affected one way or the other....

For instance, the middle class will be affected by no longer having to haul the rich folks tax load due to the lower deficit.

Those who say that they want to get rid of the deficit but don't want taxes to go up are either trying to fool us or themselves.

No, just want the spending dropped and the surplus to pay off the debt. Just because we might have to cut 80% of the spending ain't my problem, but the government spending like a drunken sailor.

Too bad you didn't have this attitude a few years ago.

That is fine to say in a conversation, but the simplest of thought experiments would show why it isn't going to happen.

Let's, to make things simple, that we cut every bit of government spending by 80% (or any other percent you like) First of all, you really can't for one big chunk, service on the debt. That has to be paid in full to keep the government's credit rating. You can't short your mortgage payment without consequences and this is the government's equivalent of that.

So let's just cut everything else but debt service by 80%, ignoring the debt payments as a side issue.

Cut defense spending by 80%

Cut Social Security & Medicare/Medicaid by 80%

and so on down the line.

It should be obvious that just the first two, both very big ticket items, are politically impossible to do. Both would cause major social and economic upheaval and cause major chaos that would insure that no member of Congress who voted for it could EVER be reelected to anything ever again.

That's why it won't happen.

should have never started ss or medicare/medicaid in the first place, so completely destroying those programs would go a long way to fix our economy.

most of that should be dismantled, since why should the tax payer be saddled with supporting people? This is not a cradle to grave government yet (not for the socialists for trying). I would rather people be tried to a job to help get them a job, but consider that BO and his pals are making that tough to do....
