A very odd and complex guy. I never met him personally but I know about some charity stuff that he did for no obvious reason, and he was very firm about not letting anyone know that he was trying to help people.
He must have thought that it would be bad for his image to be seen doing good deeds. He seemed to have a soft spot in his heart for kids, especially disadvantaged kids. I know it sounds crazy, but I swear it is true.
Maybe now that he is gone, some of these stories will start to come out. After Dave Thomas died (the guy who started Wendy's burger chain) a lot of stuff came out about the fact that he was an orphan and that he donated literally tons of money and a lot of his time, all anonymously, to help with foster care.
So I am going to go out on a limb and predict that Mr Steinbrenner will get a whole new image as a guy who did a lot of good and never wanted recognition for doing it.
