GM said its assembly plant at Shreveport, La. would continue to assemble the commercial Hummer H3 and H3T pickup trucks on a contract basis until June 2011, with a one-year option until June 2012. The military H2 version will continue to be assembled by AM General in Mishawaka, Ind., under the same terms.
The Shreveport GM plant is currently slated to close by June 2012. For the time being, the plant also is assembling the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks.
That makes me kinda sad. I used to love driving by the plant as a kid and seeing all those cars glinting in the sun, waiting to be loaded at a huge train complex. But I guess everything changes.
The Chinese, as planned, now will get all the molds and other equipment to build a fine military vehicle, without spending vast research and development funds. Thanks to all the FFers who assisted in this deal.
Um, they are getting the civilian Hummer which is nothing but a Yukon with a Hummer shell. They will be able to get their soldiers to soccer practice though
GM sold the brand in order to meet the government's CAFE standard. So thanks to the government, Hummers will still be for sale, but the Chinks will get the profits.
Welcome to the third world, USA!
