I saw a thing about George Washington, who could hardly open his mouth without mentioning God, which said that he was a solid supporter of the separation of Church and State, and had written about it, using that exact phrase.
The idea that the separation of Church and State is a myth is itself a myth. The Founders didn't want the US to end up like the European nations that were constantly embroiled in religious matters and religious wars. They were smart, those that encourage going back to State sponsored religion need to check out some of the countries where they already do that.
You could start with Iran.
