I like my SUV, and it is only heavy when I'm in it.
What is your new avatar, olympic defecation?
newfie is right. this is NOT stupid. It is smart.
There is no reason to drive a large SUV when you don't use it for work or tow/haul regularly.
People think they are safer when they are wrong. Roll overs are far more likely (and VERY common) and they are also a big danger to other cars around it.
They give the driver a false sense of security and authority. Sitting high up gives you a feeling that you own the road. But we are supposed to share the road.
Absolutely. I've read a good book on this subject, called "SUVs: The World's Most Dangerous Vehicles and How They Got That Way". It talks about how SUVs are actually MORE dangerous to drive than regular vehicles. For instance, you are far more likely to get your legs broken in an SUV accident.
Auto makers push SUVs in a big way because there is a very large profit margin on them. They basically take a $20,000 truck chassis, put a bigger cab on it, some fancy chrome and gadgets, and sell it for $50,00.
i agree - i own a smaller size SUV, and am fully aware of the risks involved. i get plenty of use with the extra space, lugging equipment here and there. i dont think theres anything wrong with paying $15 extra to own a larger car - they should put the same small tax on luxury vehicles as well. those hummers are ridiculous. that being said, i think its too simplistic to say that SUVs are the root of pollution - the auto industry - particularly the U.S. - have been dragging their feet for decades on sollutions to cleaner automobiles.
I read the same thing.
For me, loading and unloading a pickup truck is easier. I can still haul everything I need to - and it cost a butt-load less.
People in small cars don't share the road either, SUV are just easier to keep an eye on.

i fail to see how this is stupid? the freaking things are ozone killers...do everything and anything to prevent people from buying them...if taxing them to death is the answer...so be it
