I agree...the kids mentioned in the article were, without a doubt, stupid before they ever started communicating through Instant Messenger or the like.
I've always been rather annoyed when people use shorthand over IMs.

Don't blame the kids, blame thier english teachers who never re-enforced spelling or grammar. Not to mention maybe having highschool students read real literature like Poe, Tennessee Williams, Clarke, Maya Angelou, e.e. cummings, J.D. Salinger et al. Instead of "Indepentant Study" on whatever they hell they want. And having them write critical essays that can't be leached out of Coles Notes.
I blame public education due to the shift from the RRR to the political correct Bullshit!

I image these kids were naturally dumb to beging with let alone from using IM. After working in tech support I am reassured every single day that some people are just barely smart enough to feed themselves let alone read, write and speak proper English.
