President Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for giving the world "hope for a better future" and striving for nuclear disarmament ...

The deadline for nominations is February 1, meaning Obama would've been nominated after being in office for just 11 days.

He got elected for his speeches .. for the presidency and the Nobel peace prize ... not for anything he has really done to help things. He did put the kabash on the European Missile shield .. for better or worse.

He has helped lower US troop morale American troops in Afghanistan losing heart

Has he brought this country together'?? at least he has gotten people more politically active ... probably more against than for. but getting apathetic people to care once again is a positive.

I think that Al Gores winning was more a farce than Obama's prize. The fact that he was nominated for this after being in office 11 days is quite the joke however.

And if you would read, he did not win the prize in 11 days, he was nominated in 11 days. Other people nominated also, the committee just decided. Nice spin though..

Lets all jump on this because it obama, let not really look at it, or be proud for america for a day... We must bash obama!

Though the same thing happened with Bush, like i said.. When it comes to war though, bush did so much more damage to us then obama has.

First black president of the US

If that has any bearing, then shouldn't the Nobel Prize go to the country or citizenry of the United States, seeing as how they are the ones responsible for electing Obama?

As far as Obama being better than Bush, sure, the international community might like Obama as President better, but again, how does that make Obama worthy of this award?

The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Obama for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," citing his fledgling push for nuclear disarmament and his outreach to the Muslim world.

Obama, a Democrat who took office as the first black U.S. president in January, has been widely credited with improving America's global image after the eight-year presidency of George W. Bush, who alienated both friends and foes with go-it-alone policies like the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.~~

They also brought up him being a symbol of hope for a better future, which made me think of the first black US president and signs of change in America. I am a little sick of the world looking down on us like we all fools, How about you? Atleast we are becoming America again, even if some of you dont like it.

how does that make Obama worthy of this award?~~

How about you answer my question first, tell me what makes the other nomanies more worthy of the award? Because i'm willing to bet you dont even know who all else was nominated and for what.

The Committee keeps the nominations secret and asks that nominators do the same. Over time many individuals have become known as "Nobel Peace Prize Nominees", but this designation has no official standing.[7] Nominations from 1901 to 1955, however, have been released in a database.[8] When the past nominations were released it was discovered that Adolf Hitler was nominated in 1939 by Erik Brandt, a member of the Swedish Parliament. Brandt retracted the nomination after a few days.[9] Other infamous nominees included Joseph Stalin and Benito Mussolini. However, since nomination requires only support from one qualified person, all nominations do not necessarily represent the opinion of the Nobel committee itself.[citation needed]

Unlike the other Nobel Prizes, which recognize completed scientific or literary accomplishment, the Nobel Peace Prize may be awarded to persons or organizations that are in the process of resolving a conflict or creating peace.

I never said the other nominees deserve it more than Obama, so I can't answer your question. I just simply pointed out the reasons you gave, that giving it to him because he is a "black" President reduced the Nobel Peace Prize to a genetic lottery (and I have to point out, Obama is mixed-race - repeatedly calling him "black" is doing America as well as all mixed-race individuals a disservice), and that giving him the award because he is the first President since Bush reduced the Nobel Peace Prize to an international political tool.

Do I really need to repeat myself again? I haven't disputed any of that, nor did I suggest working with nations for nuke disarmament or anything else isn't valuable, so quit putting words into my mouth. You made two specific claims of reasons you feel that Obama deserves a Nobel Peace Prize, neither of which required any effort on Obama's part. I've pointed that out to you several times asking you about those assertions you made, and you have refused to discuss them, instead bringing up a reason from a conversation that did not include me. If you won't address my questions to you, then you are no longer worth speaking to.

FYI: No prize was given out in 1948, because there was no living suitable candidate.

THE NOBEL PRIZE WINNER CALLS POLITICAL OPPONENT AN ASSHOLE!!!!!

What a morning at Morning Joe! First, a "senior White House official" sent an email calling Joe Scarborough an "asshole" for mocking Pres. Obama's Nobel Peace Prize.

Scarborough and Time's Mark Halperin 14whom no one would accuse of being a right-wing hack 14had some good-natured fun with the Nobel news. A laughing-out-loud Scarborough suggested among other things that Marisa Tomei was more deserving of her Academy Award. But the Messiah will not be mocked, and it wasn't long before NBC's Savannah Guthrie, on the set, announced that she had received an email from "a senior White House official" telling Joe to "stop being an asshole". Mika Brzezinski tried to soft-pedal the insult, claiming the White House was "joking." Real side-splitter! Is this the new standard of civility from Dems so offended by "you lie"?

Personally, I feel kinda bad for Obama. Based on the comments I've seen, even he knows he really hasn't done enough to truly deserve this award. It has turned the Nobel Peace Prize into the equivalent of getting a gold star in kindergarten. Obama still has three more years in office (with potentially four more following) that he actually might have done something worthy of this award, and now no matter what he does it is always going to be looked upon with suspicion.

When it comes to titling links, don't lump us all in with Alferd/hammers/Cat/Cut, he is one and the same and a total douche bag. The rest of us are only calling shenanigans now because it is very clear that BO did not deserve this award at this time. You can defend it in blind devotion all you want, but it is what it is.

Wow zek, i didnt know alfred/hammer/cat/cut the same person, thanks for that info.. I knew we had alts but i never looked into it enough to learn who.. And i am not lumping you together at all.. The whole time here i have said many just made it all look bad, trying to give light to the fact that it not all... So is alfred steamed also? And see my post above, i am defending it but i never have said i think it deserved or not, i just think if people want to bash it they should bring something better to the table :D You know, lets talk about the people who deserved it more, lets really get into the facts, not just "BOO OBAMA
