It's not even that sinister. To be a secure superpower, they have to be as credible a threat to other nations as any nation is to them. Preferably more so. Our nuclear submarine fleet allows us to go form zero to glass crater anywhere in the world very rapidly. China needs similar threat capability to remain on even footing. Kind of like the US and china keep trading threats and competing on technology with regard to GPS and the chinese equivalent being able to determine your exact location and the exact location of any place has massive tactical value.

I don't think China has the ability. But I do believe that there are still a lot of old Chinese generals that are still very anti-American. That's why I don' believe we should be treating the Chinese like the cold war is over. I don't think they think its over. I also think we need to be a lot less helpful in helping them grow economically because I think we are going to regret doing so.
