I don't see what is so shocking about this.

Everyone knows people who work in a field where they are self-employed. Not just artists and photographers and entertainers, but musicians, real estate agents, bookkeepers and entrepreneurs of many stripes.

Unless they have a very large income from what they do, they have to keep a day job just so they can have health insurance. We aren't talking about bums here, just people with non-traditional jobs. If they didn't have to work as waiters or brewistas or couriers or cash register clerks somewhere to get health insurance, maybe they could be more successful doing what they really enjoy doing.

How shocking is the concept that you could do better doing what you really love if you didn't have to put in 8 hours a day doing something you don't want to do, just to get health insurance for your family?

Dude, the point is if everyone runs off and does what they love and makes a marginal income doing it, then you can't pay for the safety net.

Being better at something nobody has a need for doesn't magically mean there's income.

Sure, it might be pleasant goofing off on the dole, but it is not sustainable. I could quit my job tomorrow and live off my savings for a time. It'd probably lower my stress levels significantly. At least until the money started running out. Same math applies to the government, and we are ALREADY poised for outlays to exceed income on medicare and medicaid.

BTW, if you are a realtor and have a day job, you stopped being a realtor. Same goes for being an accountant.

Funny I know a lot of people who have to do what they want part time so they can work full time to get health insurance. I think it is common.

Besides, this plan doesn't give people insurance for free, they still have to pay for it. I really don't see the problem. Letting people do what they want is called Freedom. As long as insurance is available, people can put more time into the career they want and probably do better at it than they could part time.

/wonders what percent of registered realtors are able to do it full time without a second job or a spouse's job to get health insurance. Bets it is over 50%

I don't know any realtors who aren't basically retired in place, that could possibly absorb a job that paid benefits into the schedule necessary to keep customers from lynching them.

The current health plan doesn't do anything useful. About all it does is increase health care costs for the majority of Americans while subsidizing a portion of Americans who likely can't even afford the subsidized cost of health care.

Your description of realtors fits what I believe is the majority of those with a realtor's license. They can't really get traction in the business because they have to tend bar or wait on tables or work a construction job in order to get benefits.

A small percentage of realtors get most of the listings and sell most of the property. The rest are struggling, and can only work at it part time.

The same is true of many other fields where people work as independent contractors.

I can't guarantee that all of them would be more productive in their field if they didn't have to hold down another job in order to get benefits, but it isn't a stretch to think it is possible.

Your description of the current plan does not agree with the one described to me at a recent medical convention. They see reform as being generally good for patients and the public, but parts of it they think are bad for doctors, especially for certain specialties. I am going to go with the idea that they have a more objective source of information than you or I do.

Why would you think that people who essentially represent lobby demographics have a more objective source of their facts than you or I?

My statement about costs comes from the GAO.

Aesop - The Ant and the Grasshopper

In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest.

"Why not come and chat with me," said the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling and moiling in that way?"

"I am helping to lay up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and recommend you to do the same."

"Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper; "We have got plenty of food at present." But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil.

When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food and found itself dying of hunger - while it saw the ants distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer. Then the Grasshopper knew: It is best to prepare for days of need.

a great story and too true. I can't stand people trying to depend on the government, which limits our freedoms and liberty with our approval since we are a bunch of suckers.

A lot of parents have to have second and third jobs just to make ends meet .. forget insurance. With inflation due to DC economic policies, prices of food, shelter and basic items will and have increased beyond many peoples ability to pay. That is what taxes, overspending and the federal reserve will do for you.

My main problem with this health care bill, everyone should be covered if they want .. 'for free' as in many countries do. This bill does not do that. Both the ants and the grasshoppers should be covered, not just the grasshoppers.

Speaking of fake data, you have been listened to a lot of nonsense on this(and many other)topic(s).

The government isn't going to be insuring these people, at least most of them-some will get Medicare who aren't getting it now, most of the newly insured will be covered by private insurance companies.

Who's a bunch of suckers NOW?

I got your Death Panels RIGHT HERE

(Okay, that was over the top )

From this you can see how the intellectual mind of a progressive thinker works, and how the warped mind of an economist type, likely conservative, does not work.

Mr. Gramps is right. Whoever wants to should be able to follow their Jones. There are many, such as Mr. Gramps, who are happy and willing to pay the tab of those who follow the cool winds of their love. Just contact Mr. Gramps who will send as much money as needed to BO to fund any health care, or other needs, these gentle souls of Allah require. This system works very well in every other part of the world where harmony and glee reins unhindered.

A state is better governed which has but few laws, and those laws strictly observed. Some really wacky neocon named R. Decartes
