I heard that she found out some tabloids found out that she has gone over to the other side. She was just getting the story out before they could do it for her, sort of the way Letterman did with his sex scandal.
Who knows if that is true, but it would explain the timing of the announcement.
But think of it, Alex P Keaton's mom a lesbian! What a 'very special episode' that would make!
