It is already illegal to kill babies. However, killing a developing non-sentient human shouldn't be illegal and it is a very different thing.
Realistically a child's higher brain functions don't really mature until about the age of two or three, which is the development stage Freud called the ego. Before that time children are driven by instinct much like an animal is. And this isnt to say that animals dont have feelings, or that young children dont have feelings, but it is to say that a developed human is much different than a typical animal. This preliminary stage of human development has been linked to the lack of higher brain activity, and the transition has been described by the terrible twos. Before this time humans cant think of philosophical ideas and their comprehension is limited to pattern matching.
When a baby is developing in the womb it is a component of the mother, very much like a specialized organ. The fetus is not yet an individual, it cant think for itself and it most definitely isnt sentient. Near the end of the pregnancy the developing baby begins to diverge from the mother, but until the cord is cut the baby is not its own creature.
I personally believe that abortions are morally questionable, but thats only because I have a religious background, and it should be noted that many others do not have the same beliefs that I do. I dont like the idea of aborting possible souls and I dont like the implication that it could be spiritual murder. However, it is not the job of the government to enforce metaphysical philosophies. If you believe that abortions are wrong then you shouldnt have abortions. If you feel that abortions are sinful then feel free to expose that belief, but dont push for its legislation because then we are no better, as an example, than nations enforcing Islamic laws.

So a young girl, lets 17, gets taken advantage of at a party and ends up pregnant from this, has no means to support a child and is scared to death of the thought of being a mother. She should have the child anyway?

As I said before, this isn't how I feel, but this is the factual truth and legislation is designed for science, not for personal beliefs. If you feel it's a sin to abort a fetus then don't have an abortion (or pressure someone else to have one), and let the people that do damn themselves.
I would also like to point out that I strongly disagree with late term abortions, but once again that is mainly for a religious reason, and also because the aborted fetus looks a lot like a baby. But, neither of these are good reasons for banning late term abortions.
Life is not life. A cell is "alive", but it's certainly not life I respect. Small insects are alive, but I have no qualms about killing them. And fetuses, especially during the earlier stages, are nothing more than a human prototype that do not even have operating instincts.

It's easy for the anti-abortion crowd to pass judgment and say what people should and shouldn't do. However, I prefer to deal in reality. The reality is there are already enough unwanted children in the world. Bringing more unwanted children into the world doesn't do them any favors. They are often not cared for properly, exposed to the deprivation of poverty, exposed to diseases in uetero such as HIV and drug addiction, etc.

The true result of anti-abortion laws will be to make women second class citizens.
The only way to insure that no one ever has an abortion would be to do what the Chinese do (with a different purpose in mind) moniter every woman's mentrual cycle from the time of her first period into menopause.
One problem I envision is the 1 in 5 or so pregnancies that terminate spontaneously, miscarriage. I don't know how a woman might defend herself in court against charges of inducing a miscarriage, when it happened on its own. Maybe just locking them all up would be safest, because after all, when abortion becomes illegal, the life of the unborn child becomes more important than the life of the woman carrying that child.

Well maybe responsibility might take hold in this people who don't think beyond themselves. It is a shame that any abortion should done, except in case of rape and similar cases.
So Baron, you think abortion is wrong, I assume, because you believe abortion kills a human being, but you say it is okay "... in the case of rape and other similar cases".
If abortion is wrong, why should it be okay because of the sins of the father? How does that make any sense? If a fetus is a human being, how can it be justified to sentence it to death because its father was a scumbag rapist?
I do not think that abortion is an ideal form of birth control, but I do think that taking away a woman's right to choose would be a huge step backward. You would still have abortions, it would just mean that wealthy women would travel to get them and poor women would put their lives at risk to do so.
Of course it is a shame, it is a tragedy. Right now it is a personal, and family tragedy.
Making abortion illegal would make it a larger tragedy for those who have abortions and for everyone else.
Over half of all pregnancies fail to survive the initial processes. Only 40% of conceptions make it through the first trimester. Apparently God isn't too worried about it or he would have designed more intelligently.

If a person is made pregnant by force, why should they be forced to carry to term the child? Life is important, but even than there are a few limits to that protection. Killing another person should merit death penality in a lot of cases, but our law system is very imperfect; due to those seeking the spotlight for a guility plea and enough law enforcement personnel not doing their jobs right, rushing to death in non-clear cut cases can be a terrible mistake.
If the people are forced to be responsible for their own actions, everyone runs around saying that their rights are being abused. If the child would be horrible deformed, than consideration for abortion should be allowed. Not that I hate deformed people, but a quality of life issue could arise.
If people are dead-set on killing another person due to their own fault, then they take the risk on their own. Either a mexican doctor or a hanger, it's now on their head. If you can't take responsibility for your own actions or have morals....
Those who oppose abortion should be ready to adopt the potentially aborted child upon the child's birth.
The topic is just another one of people trying to push their religious/moral beliefs onto others. Don't tell a woman she can't have an abortion. Don't tell me I can't kill myself rather than be an invalid. Don't tell me I can't smoke dope or have sex doggie style in my own home.

I have to step in and say that freedom has to be limited. Freedom, for instance, does not include gun ownership or the right of non-oppressed minorities or non-minorities to organize in representaion of their race or gender. Such organization can cause racial disharmony.
I think anyone who considers abortion as a form of birth control is just plain sick.
