Dec 02, 09 01:39 am — I received a 2009 Grassroots Survey for my county in Florida in the mail. It was addressed to me, someone who has been a registered Democrat for as long as I have lived in this county, which is more than a decade.
Here is the first sentence of this rather long letter followed by a similarly worded "survey."
"The liberal elites and mainstream media would have you believe the American people are 100% behind the Obama Democrats socialist plans to "change" our nation."
I won't go into the word play or the spin or even the mind set behind this so-called survey, but there is one aspect of this mailing that has me scratching my head. Why send a letter full of extremist language such as "a Government-run health care experiment" or the "bankrupting of America, both morally and financially" to a registered Democrat?
Is the GOP so confident that their through-the-looking-glass view of politics is both correct and shared by everyone that they are willing put the kind of language that is usually only whispered among the members of the base and let everyone see it?
Any thoughts on why they would do this?

I received the same mailing Gramps. I am a registered Repug. I can tell you that I received similar mailings from the Dems this past election for both the Presidential and the local congressional races. The terminology was different but the message was the same, "They suck and are ruining the Country, we can fix it." Problem is, both parties suck and they are both ruining the Country. Period.

The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

I must admit that in the past I have received highly partisan letters from the DNC, accusing former President Bush of stealing the White House, of subverting the Constitution, and so on, but this seems different to me.

The dems sent me stuff assuming I was a like-minded individual and that I would like the pushing-it-to-the-limit kind of talk that those of us on the inside track of the Party would appreciate and agree with. (I never have sent them a dime, by the way)

Again, this seems different, because the rhetoric is less grounded in actual reality, and the overheated verbiage is being shared with those that might not share the same world view.

I confess that I am worried about the GOP. In a way, we need their desire for fiscal responsibility, for limited government, for cutting red tape and needless regulation. One Party government always seems to turn out badly, the perfect example being the one hundred years of dem control over New York City, pre-Guliani.

But if the GOP is in the grip of Tea Baggers and those who thing Obama is an illegal immigrant born on the planet Uranus, or whatever, we are in deep doo-doo as a nation.

Is there nothing that sane Conservatives can do to get back control over their Party?

I think the only thing between your "rhetoric is less grounded in actual reality," and the survey you are talking about is time. It's just further slide down the same slippery slope. Debate and rhetoric was replaced with outrage and ideology, and now that is being dumbed down to what amounts to advertising catch phrases. If this last election wasn't an homage to american idol, I don't know what it was. The GOP side of it has turned into a 24-7-365 campaign ad, and in that environment, you pitch negative ads as it is the only thing worth spending money on.

Personally, I am deeply hoping that the current McDonald vs. Chicago case goes well for the RKBA side. If it does it will put a whole lot of fairly middle of the road 2nd amendment voters back in play asking what you can do for me rather than digging in with a bunker mentality. If it overturns the slaughterhouse case and brings back the privileges and immunities clause from the grave it could put a LOT more issue voters on both sides back in play.

Did they ask for money too'??

I think it is a vast third party wing conspiracy.

Unfortunately the Tea Bag fans are being infiltrated by guys like Newt .. trying to get into a grass roots group of people to coax them to vote Repub. Most of the tea bag followers are just fed up with DC though and tired of the same ol same ol from the clowns in DC.
