Feb 20, 09 01:45 am — Well, Madvillians, the time has come for another Madville Site Blog which can only mean one thing -- updates, updates, updates!
Here's what we've taken care of during this round of revisions:
- Voting - You may have noticed voting is a bit different. We decided to remove the ability to vote down and make things even simpler. So, here's how things are going to work. If you find a story to be interesting, intriguing, thought-provoking, entertaining, or simply put, worthy of a read - vote it up. If the link is a duplicate link, blatant spam, or NSFW, report it. If you don't agree with the link or find it boring, just move on.
- Reports - Speaking of reporting it, you now have the ability to report it!
- Toolbar for Outgoing Links - When you click a link, it'll automatically add a top toolbar, similar to the old Madville, that'll have links back to the comment page so you can participate as well as a search. If you would rather not have this and preferred the streamlined version that we previously had, no worries because...
- Ability to Disable Toolbar - The toolbar can be turned on and off via the member control panel. So, if you like it, use it. If you don't, turn it off. It's enabled by default.
- Search Changes - You can now search content and comments and filter them all by user.
- User Rankings - Sure, we had a nice community ranking page that provided total accomplishments, but how about the day-to-day stuff for those of us who are really competitive? It's been added. Now you can view how everyone in the community is doing in terms of popular links, comments, and points for the current day.
- Popular Tags - The popular tags are shown on the lower right hand side for a given category. This will give you a visual keyword-based way to quickly see what the popular topics are of the week.
- Profile Comments - You can now browse what everyone has said by visiting their profile page and clicking Comments.
- Misc. Bug Fixes - Some of you have sent in various bug fixes and we appreciate it. Some minor things here and there were taken care of. These may not necessarily be things you notice, but it's all part of keeping Madville a well-oiled machine.
- New Video Embeds - LiveLeak and CollegeHumor have been added to the list so they'll show on Madville rather than leaving the page.
... and as a little bonus for our moderators, we thought it was about time to put them to work so they now have the ability to moderate a few things here and there, as well!

Loving the outgoing link toolbar! I know I'm in the minority in my wanting it, but I think it's great!
It looks good, and doesn't take up as much room as the old frame did.
Yeah, I turned that sucker off intermediately. It was one of the things that drove me nuts about the old site.
All the users that had issues with their rankings should be happy to see the changes.
I've just text-ed NPH and asked if he approves...
Activity log. To much information and to bulky in my opinion.
I don't need/want to see every action: users votes, user posted item, Zem blows TC kiss... so-on-and-so-on...
Comments. let me see the latest comment and leave it at that please.

Shows and hide the link descriptions on the homepage - based on user feedback to make the listings on the frontpage more closer together.

Show comments on links and blogs, votes and link submissions not so much since we have the upcoming links tab.
In the outgoing link toolbar, there are two 'Thumbs Up' icons that, well, don't really do anything. How about the ability to vote on links from the toolbar? And you really only need one icon, methinks. Nice looking toolbar though :)

Yep, we are working to add ability to comment and vote via the toolbar.

There is a feature that has been missing ever since MIYH bought the site from Joe. An RSS feed. I would probably be much more active on this site if I could bring the links into my rss reader like I used to do 5 years ago. I read my rss reader several times a day and I sometimes don't make it here more than once a week.
There are RSS feeds. Click the orange icon next to the left of the title on the frontpage.
RSS feeds have been available the entire time ;) /backend.php (which now redirects to a different URL, but is still accessible)
Well I know how I missed that. I am used to it the icon showing up in the location box.
That page stopped working for me a long time ago. Once it stopped I never retried it.
We need an 'add to favorites' option for links we really like.

Another bug, if a message is sent to a user the site doesn't recognize you cant delete the message. 
Couple of thoughts.
- Popular Links: I see links that are days old popping up on the top of the page. Have we not exhausted them, clicks/comments, after a few days?
- Upcoming Links: I'm just tired of weeding through site plugs. If I wanted to browse [insert random site here] I would bookmark their page rather than MV.
- Dupe-dupitty-dupe-dupe.

OK, made some changes to this. We'll post a blog about it more in depth but this shouldn't happen and should get better.
mis-clicking done easy.
1) scroll to top, or click the 'top' button
2) once at top of page click MV banner to be brought back to front page
3) once on front page click 'Upcoming Links' tab
4) after arriving here scroll (notice there ain't one of them fancy buttons to get you to the bottom) to the bottom of the page
5) click on appropriate page number that you were previously viewing
6) scroll to find quality link that should be on front page, click to view it again
7) post comment and vote
This should all be bypassed now if you use the window, right? If you click on the link you were viewing, it'll open in a new window (an option) with a toolbar (also an option).
If you want to comment/vote, click the title and it'll bring you to the view page where you can do so. After you're done, close that window down and you'll have the original window in the background where you left off.
And link titles being changed automatically ain't cool either. It's the P G A not Pga

It is auto-changing. Had I spaced it it would have taken but all titles (that's I've submitted) correct to; Cap-start each word and deletes '-'
Ya, I see what you mean, it did it even after I corrected it.
LOL Even the comment above deleted the "and" symbol I used as well as what followed. In the first one re: PGA I was being a smartass and using accents to mimic the pronunciation of Pga and that was deleted.

The fact that LOSERS can go back and upvote links from AGES ago that were originally REJECTED is beyond ridiculous.
My sympathies to the owner of this site. This use to be a clear, concise listing of links. Now it's crap. No games (I know it's under entertainment). The only reason I posted things was to see how many hits I would get. So, for me, no reason to post anything. This site was cool, now it's junk.
In all fairness I wouldn't say it's junk; it's new and a face left never hurts. Ben and Peter have made a lot of adjustments based on feed-back from the users Lets just hope that their not finished.
You only submitted links to see the amount of hits you would get?

Well, the site seems to have streamlined drinking from the fire hose, but finding anything after it flies past is kind of hard. More categories helped with that.
The voting system is still kind of screwed, The fact you can vote on your own links and can vote up really old stuff is not a good idea.
Older links won't ever go popular now so that shouldn't be a problem now.
Any updated on that blocking users thing I had asked about?
I'm trying, I'm really trying... but the flow here just isn't working that would at least help it.
Some changes we made should cut down on any type of spam, etc. so we'll see if that works out and trims down the list first.
