The fact that you're picking up their signal (broadcast SSID) doesn't mean they don't have encryption of MAC filtering enabled. These can be circumvented, but it takes time.

or just call some dial up place and tell them you'd like to try them out before signing up. dial up is better than nothing..
dial up would be perfect right now if i had a phone line here.but i dont.
cause i have tons of free dial up accounts from my old job at a ISP. so thats the easy way out. but no phone. :(
If you are using a PCMCIA card or if your laptop has a external antenna connector (I am not aware of too many that do though) you can buy a Wifi antenna. I have seen some for like $30.
Anything else (besides moving your laptop closer) would require the participation of the guy you are hijacking.
