Nov 12, 05 04:47 am — Last year, I think it was, someone posted a blognatorial about what books Madville members were reading at the time. It was there that I was recommended The Da Vinci Code and Join Me, and both books turned out to be thoroughly entertaining reads (especially Join Me... if you haven't read it, DO IT!)

I just finished reading Velocity by Dean Koontz, and it was okay. My problem now is that I've run out of things to read. I was wondering what everyone else is currently reading or has finished reading so I can get suggestions.

Winter's coming up, which is my favorite time to crack open a book, so I need some help! Recommendations, anyone?

The Gunslinger Start the series, you won't regret it. My first introduction to Mr. King sometime last year and I was hooked.

I've read all three you've mentioned...

Join Me was excellent, Danny is a cool dude. ::grin::
Velocity - so, so. He's written far better.
DaVinci code was okay too.

Two series spring to mind .......

Peter F Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy is worth a look if you're a sci-fi fan. You won't come away with a new understanding about the human condition, or gain some fabulous insight into Life...but its a damn good Space Opera / Horror / Sci-fi Adventure, and an epic read. Highly entertaining.

The other is Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. Its a 12 parter, huge in scope, and the 11th part has just been published. It has its bad points throughout the series, but ultimately the high points far outweigh the low.

Other than those two....meh....I discovered James Elroy recently. Never a big crime fiction fan, but his stuff is very good. LA Confidential is excellent.

Been reading a bit of Irish history recently too for some reason. Probably not of much interest to you though ::grin::

WOT is awesome. I have since soured on Jordan's unnecessarily stringing the whole thing out until is approaches the ridiculous, but the first 3/4 of the series should be placed very high in the rankings of Fantasy literature.

As is most of Terry Brooks stuff as well.

Eh, and the Covenant novels of Stephen R. Donaldson.

'nuff said.

I'd definitely be interested in the Irish history books! Also, my friend Heath was into the wheel of time books, and he and some of our other friends raved about it. I myself have not read them, but I am curious what you consider low points of the series to be. Does it get too dull? Does it re-hash the same stuff too much? What's up?

Yeah, I devoured the Covenant novels.

Although I havent gotten around to starting the new series yet? Have you ? Worth a look ?

Donaldson's Gap series is also an excellent read.

I just thought there were a couple of books over the last 4 or so where nothing much seemed to happen - Path of Daggers and Winters Heart in particular.

I was getting the impression Jordan wasn't quite sure where he wanted to go with the story. I've just started Knife of Dreams, and it seems to have picked up the pace a little. Hopefully he'll finish on a high note with the final two of the series.

I have the new Covenant book, but so far it is just keeping dust off my shelf at the moment. Maybe when the weather turns real nasty, I'll tie into it and let you know...
