I too have bitched about this...if you like the links that much...post them in a journal....at least then the Madvillians will get a peek at them...
Ahh yes another satisfied customer. I have felt your pain many o times. I have also spoke of link woes many o times but it is usually quickly returned with a salvo of admin's saying that the job is hard.
You mean like Newfie, he is a permanent ban-er

Choke on it.

that's a good one, but I think this one is a bit more fitting.

sure it's whining to the admins, not constructive critcism (which was light hearted, hence the waves, i dont use waves when im upset) and its whingin to those who don't have the problem..........well waaaa waaaa waaa, last time i checked i was entitled to my opinion and its not like i was complaining about something other people dont have preoblems with
Don't worry B Bomb....we all need a little rant and vent every now and then.
What was constructive about it ?
You didnt offer any solution, any ideas or any thoughts. You just bitched.
last time i checked i was entitled to my opinion
*shrugs*
Knock yourself out - likewise, we have the right to respond sarcastically or ignore you.
And incidentally....
Since when did madville become a dictator ship, telling us what is and isn't interesting?
Since always.
And you thought I was a pain in the ass.
Live n learn, huh ?
*sighs*
let me get my hard hat so i can do some construction. i will try to clarify.
people get mad because of the way links are approved. you want to lable people whiners cause it easy to pass the problem off as people just whining. Links should be filtered for approval not judged. Approval should be based simple guidelines that are easy to pass, like: the link works. it doesn't promote hatered or is discriminatory against race, sex, or sexual orientation. you don't have to register to view it. legitamate reasons to reject a link, not intrest. The internet is a huge diverse place, and so are Madvillians.
this would make your job easier for many reasone:by decreasing who complains and the legitimatcy of the complaints. people arent complaining because a rejection brings their approval rating down (that would be whining, and i highly doubt you get those complaints), they have legitimate reasons. they complain because of the thought police monopoly on how links are approved. It's easy to sit and lable people as only complaining and just pass it off, its another to sit and question why. i don't want to go to hesitate to submit a link because i wonder if the admins will like it or not. Let the madvillians be the judge (democray) of their links. If a link bothers some one so much they can report it
please respond to this becuase it is not whining and im not attacking anyone personaly, it would be nice to know what the admins have to say and reasons why this can't be. afterall im trying to be constructive, not whining
Ok....since you're asking reasonably, I'll reply in a reasonable fashion.
The reason I get pissy with these queries is that I seem to be answering the same thing over and over again, and more often than not, the queries are little more than bitching and whining.
Anyway....as I said, I'll break the habit of a lifetime, and explain reasonably. Just don't expect to see it very often ::grin::
First off, you outlined some basic criteria we should use when we're approving or rejecting links. In fact, those are pretty much the criteria we already follow.
Before I go into the reasons some of the seemingly interesting links get rejected, let me outline why some links get rejected offhand.
- Dupes, obviously, where we spot them. Sometimes some get through. I dont consider this a problem. It means other users get to see something they might have missed.
- Hardcore porn. We're not a porn site. Anyone who wants porn knows where to get it. Full frontal nudity is fine; we just don't link to hardcore sites.
- Site Plugs. These include out and out advert sites, mainstream commercial sites or sites where the author of a piece submits it himself. If its particularly good, the latter case might get through. But usually its not good at all, or the author wouldnt have to plug it himself.
- A large number of links from the same site. Personally speaking, this *really* annoys me. Some users go to a satire or news site and instead of submitting just one good news story or satire piece, they submit 5 or 6 or more from the same site. This is pointless - if the site is good enough, the user will spot this themselves and explore it. Force feeding them won't work. The obvious exceptions to this are CNN, Yahoo, etc - the big news sites.
- Mainstream news. Obviously...a lot of it gets through. However, if theres a large number of strange, unusual or weird links, the mainstream stuff will be rejected in favour of that every time. Madville has always been about the weird stuff - the mainstream news is just padding. Again, an obvious exception is big, groundbreaking news - the Columbia disaster, the war in Iraq etc.
- Needs registration and Dead Link. Self-explanatory.
- Hate sites / Racist sites / Religious sites. This is a tough call sometimes. Quite often we let these through, not to promote them or their views, but because their ludicrous views spark debate. And sometimes because their ideas are so far out they're just downright weird.
Thats pretty much it for the ones that get rejected out of hand.
As to the ones that would otherwise be interesting, it really depends on the site activity that particular day.
We get up to 400 submissions a day. We try where possible to limit the amount displayed on the front page to, at most, one link every 15 mins from 7 AM to 12 AM - thats 68 links. From 12 AM to 7 AM, it can be every hour or every half hour, depending on the submission rates. Sometimes its every 15 mins, but not often during those hours. So thats usually 7 to 14 links, with a maximum of 28 in that time slot. So the maximum links we show on the front page over a 24 hour period is rarely more than 96 Sometimes we just approve links to appear immediately if theres a really large number, and they're interesting enough - so it might be as many as 120 per day - But thats *extremely* rare.
So...with up to 400 links submitted, sometimes more, and space available for a max of 120 - something has to give. Theres no way we're going to approve that many links, because they wont all be read, and in fact it will put a lot of people off. Very few users have the time or inclination to wade through that much garbage, and we need to try maintain a balance.
Unfortunately, sometimes we have to reject a link that would be approved another day if there weren't so many submissions. And yes, sometimes "Sorry - Not interesting enough" is not the best description for why a link is rejected, but we have a limited number of options to choose from, and they obviously arent going to cover every eventuality. Its not meant as a personal criticism of anyones taste, its just the most convenient way for a busy admin to reject something.
Im not just saying this, but I honestly cant understand why people get so bent out of shape when a link is rejected. Its not like were doing it to piss someone off, and its certainly not a personal attack on their taste.
I also know some users are fed up hearing what they think are the same old excuses its tough work, blah, blah, its voluntary, blah blah. Well, to be perfectly honest I dont care. It *is* tough, it *is* voluntary, and we *dont* want a monetary reward, because we do it for love of the site, so Im sorry Im not going to listen to someone denigrate the hard work we do by mindlessly bitching. If you have constructive criticism, or a genuine question, then fine, Ill (possibly ::grin::) respond in kind. But you can guarantee if its a bitchfest where the admins get slagged off or insulted, itll either be ignored, deleted, or responded to in the same tone.
Finally, and this isnt aimed at you BB5, but at everyone The above was the last time Im going to explain this. I really cant be bothered rehashing this every time someone complains, so in future Im just going to link to this comment by way of reply.
Thank and have a nice day
Your occasionally friendly neighbourhood Admin-man
Shiva.
::grin::
Shiva, I have to give you a standing ovation for this one.
Perhaps this could be a front page sticky for future reference to newbies and those of us with short memories..
Thank you, I am certain I am not the only one who appreciates the time you took and the articulate manner in which you explained this.

Well said.
*I* am gonna buy *you* a pizza.

Hold the anchovies
Dude. plain cheese. It's NYC pizza. None better.
Well I am not going to give a standing ovation but I will give it a small golf clap.
Although I am very hardheaded and I want speak for the newbs and other members who get links rejected. And give a few of my suggestions on what can help this dilemma.
At first I just used Madville for the links since it seemed to be the place to get useful links that were not already on every other link site ( I.E. fark, slashdot, freshnews.... ) Then I started finding obscure links that seems fit the mold of a good Madville link. I then decided to join the point race an start submitting links. A few of my first submissions were immediately rejected but I soon started to get the hang of it and get some link through. I was excited about this since I was getting points, I know they are not worth anything but since they were called points and it seemed like the goal of other Madville users was to get as many points as possible. I came to that conclusion since right there on the main page of Madville was a listing of the highest scoring users. I was amazed that users like TheBaron, Newfie and 8 others could get so many points so I started my quest and became
an active member of Madville.
Not long after I started to rack up those link and comment points and started to move up in the ranks of Madville. I was at one point #824(or so) in the community but now I am #49 (or so) in the community, this came from my want to active and maybe even get my handle on that leaderboard. As you all know I also got some ejected links however I felt they were great links since some were even submitted later by other Madville users and approved even after my link was previously rejected for not being interesting. This is just one example of the over sites in the link approval system but you get my point why users get annoyed.
If you don't see where I am going with this I will point it out. Its only human to strive to be better and to be #1 even if there is no tangible reward. And it really is letdown when someone hinders that progress, especially if you feel or know it was done in error.
Now you may be asking what sort of constructive criticism or suggestions do I have to help Madville. I have many suggestions but I will only give the two that I feel will help the issue that is at hand.First of all get rid the point system. When a member sees that another member has more points or that they will be rewarded with a cool necktie for submitting the most link in a given month you are setting this up to be a competition. Second admins need to be rewarded for their work. If an admin is going to put lots of their time into Madville they need to get something in return. how about Ad space to generate personal revenue from visitors or even a portion of the revenue generated by advertisers. Doing this will encourage the admins to try to get more traffic since the more visitors mean more clicks and more clicks equal more revenue for MIYH and the Admins.
My 2 cents
Kibby
Dude......did you even *read* it ?
Kibby - Second admins need to be rewarded for their work.
Shiva - and we *dont* want a monetary reward, because we do it for love of the site
And likewise -
Kibby - some were even submitted later by other Madville users and approved even after my link was previously rejected for not being interesting
Shiva - Unfortunately, sometimes we have to reject a link that would be approved another day if there weren't so many submissions. And yes, sometimes "Sorry - Not interesting enough" is not the best description for why a link is rejected
Seriously.....and people wonder why I'm such an ignorant fucker sometimes

Did you *READ* my post ? or did you just *read* my post?
Ohh and I guess this comment is out the door.
If you have constructive criticism, or a genuine question, then fine, Ill (possibly ) respond in kind. But you can guarantee if its a bitchfest where the admins get slagged off or insulted, itll either be ignored, deleted, or responded to in the same tone.
Where was I bitching ? Where was I giving a tone? I tried to give some constructive criticism but I get slammed. Way to go and flame a few suggestion that could help you. Figures... Oh well this is the exact reason I dropped my Premium membership and slowed my link submissions to little or nothing.
horray a reasonable explanation, not name calling
That was a funny journal.... baha. But I do like ants........

Boo hoo.
