Apr 29, 03 12:01 am — As promised, here are better pics of our newest, Tamari, as well as our Shiba/Chow mix, Sakura.

There, I'm done rambling about my pooches.

For now....

I'm a fan of fbsd. I'd like to check out Lindows in the future once they fix a few things. I'm definetly not doing everything as root.

haven't tried solaris 9 yet, we'll be running 8 for a while i feel. :) i like freebsd but never can get x working beyond 640x480 @ 256 colors (maybe if i'd quit installing on neomagic chipset!). as for flavor of linux, i've been using redhat since 4.0 so i'm partial to it, but i also like slackware cuz it feels cleaner.

My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it.

It's unstable? People tend to forget how many people actually use linux... virtually none. The desktop wars are over. MS won. Game over. The server market may be another story, but you must remember that Windows NT/2000 is now less exploitable than linux. The deterioration of linux on the server market is being brushed over by zealots. The fact of the matter remains that Linux does nothing better than any other OS. For example, Solaris and FreeBSD obviously outperform linux on the mid-range server market (and solaris on the high end). On the desktop, Windows is obviously superior. On PDA's you have PalmOS and WinCE. Both of which are more suitable for the job. A lot of people can't explain exactly where linux fits in. It doesn't do a job as well as alternatives. And the fact that it's free as in beer is not an excuse.

Also, some of the things in that article is just WRONG. For example, take this quote: "Companies such as Red Hat and VA Linux are still chugging along despite the unforgiving economic climate." Well, for starters, VA Linux doesn't exist anymore. Yep, that's right. They changed their name to VA Software and made sourceforce CLOSED-SOURCE. That's right. No more free software from VA Software. And redhat didn't really break even last year. A lot of debt was hidden, and giving the current 'economic climate', they aren't expected to pull a profit this quarter either. Oh yea, we can't leave out Loki. They listen to the linux zealots when they said the linux community was large and was willing to buy products. They listened to that and got screwed hardcore. They are now bankrupt. A lot of companies relying on open-source are dying. Not many people in the linux community are buying software produced by companies. You can't have it both ways, people. You can't have large-scale adoption of linux and not want companies to make money from it. The only companies able to suceed from linux and open source in general will be companies like IBM and Cisco that don't make money from software anyways, but rather, hardware. * end of rant *

Linux Rocks..... it reminds me of the days of running Unix and when Lucent was still Bell Labs.

However... linux is a hobby os and will never be main stream

it's more than a hobby os. we're considering a beowulf cluster of linux boxes cuz our clustered win servers possibily can't handle what we need, although we know linux would work great.

cinder,

You are dam brave.... go out and get a real system... run unix or bsd... or if you are running sun stuff run their OS... I am not saying windows is the best, I am however saying that linux is not something I would trust my works data and or money making ability on.

Pics turned out bigger than I wanted. Both are getting along great, a tiny bit of jealousy, but they haven't even growled at each other yet. Tamari is loving the fact that her food dish is always full, and we get the good stuff, Nutro lamb and rice.

Thanks for all the nice comments!

I was playing with the new pooch, and squeezing her leg (which has NO meat on it at all) and jokingly said; "I'd have to cook this a looong time to get it tender". My wife summarily smacked me good.

Hey, I'm a cook, what can I say...
